Inflatable cloud installation hovers above MIXC Village entrance in Dongguan

Opened in 2025 in Dongguan, MIXC VILLAGE is the first premium outlet model developed by China Resources Group, positioned within the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area as a “slow-living island.” The project reframes retail as an experiential environment, where atmosphere and emotional value take precedence over consumption alone.

Within this vision, PILLS was commissioned to develop the atmospheric installation strategy, culminating in a landmark gateway intervention that defines the identity of the development. More than a visual marker, the installation introduces a narrative framework that transforms arrival into a spatial experience, inviting visitors to step out of the city and into a slower, more reflective rhythm.

The design is structured around an imagined journey. The site is conceived as an island beyond the map, where a drifting cloud becomes both destination and guide. Visitors move through a sequence of spatial moments, from arrival to encounter and gathering, forming a continuous narrative that links architecture, movement, and emotion.

Set along the coastline of the Binhai Bay New Area in Dongguan, the development is visible from the Guangzhou Shenzhen Riverside Expressway, establishing an immediate presence at the scale of the territory. Facing the sea while anchored to the urban fabric, the white architectural ensemble of MIXC VILLAGE reads as a floating island, its volumes set against a continuous horizon of sky and water. This dual condition, both grounded and suspended, reinforces the project’s identity as a threshold between city and landscape, where architecture becomes part of a larger environmental composition.

This storyline operates as both concept and infrastructure, shaping circulation while embedding meaning into the environment. The entrance installation acts as the opening chapter, framing the transition between urban reality and an immersive landscape of leisure.

Suspended above the main entrance, the cloud installation functions as an urban-scale icon. Visible from the surrounding coastal infrastructure, it establishes a strong presence across the skyline while guiding visitors toward the entry.

Its form is derived from the merging of multiple spherical geometries into a continuous ring-like volume, balancing abstraction with recognisable softness. Rather than remaining static, the installation is conceived as a responsive system, capable of adapting to environmental conditions.

Using air membrane technology, the cloud behaves as a dynamic entity. Internal systems regulate air pressure and helium balance, allowing the structure to subtly expand, contract, and shift in height throughout the day. This movement introduces a temporal dimension, reinforcing the perception of the installation as a living element.

A misting system further enhances the experience, moderating the microclimate while reinforcing the atmospheric quality of the space. Integrated safety controls monitor wind conditions and automatically adjust the installation’s position when required, ensuring stability without compromising its visual lightness.

At dusk, the installation transforms into a luminous field. Its surface becomes a medium for evolving light and colour, reflecting the changing sky while projecting abstract patterns inspired by natural phenomena. The interplay of illumination and mist creates a layered, cinematic atmosphere, activating the entrance plaza as a place of gathering and pause.

Through the integration of narrative, technology, and environmental design, the project extends beyond the role of public art. It operates as a spatial interface that connects city, architecture, and emotion, redefining the commercial entrance as an experiential threshold.

In the context of shifting consumer behaviour, MIXC VILLAGE proposes a model of “slow commerce,” where storytelling and atmosphere shape engagement. The installation becomes both symbol and system, transforming everyday retail into a space of imagination, memory, and renewed connection to life.
