Hau Giang House by SPACE+ Architecture Reinterprets Mekong Delta Living

Set along a quiet street in Long Mỹ, Hau Giang House is conceived as a compact multi generational home shaped by climate, memory, and everyday life in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. Designed by SPACE+ Architecture, the residence sits beneath the canopy of an existing star apple tree, preserving a familiar landscape element that has long accompanied the family’s daily routines.

Rather than separating contemporary living from local tradition, the project draws directly from the spatial culture of the Delta. Verandas, shaded transitional spaces, bamboo screens, rainwater jars, and naturally ventilated interiors are reinterpreted through a restrained architectural language that balances functionality with emotional familiarity.

At the center of the house, an open living and dining area unfolds beneath a large skylight that acts as the spatial and environmental core of the project. Here, cooking, conversation, and family gatherings take place within a naturally lit volume where shifting shadows mark the rhythm of the day. The skylight also supports passive cooling by drawing air through the interior, reducing dependence on mechanical systems even during periods of intense summer heat.

The modest four meter wide plan is organized to maximize openness and continuity. Living room and kitchen spaces merge into a single flowing environment, while strategically placed voids improve ventilation and establish visual connections between floors.

Toward the front facade, a shaded veranda extends daily life outward to the street. Equipped with a traditional rainwater jar, the space recalls the social atmosphere of rural Southern Vietnamese homes where neighbors gather for tea, conversation, and moments of pause overlooking nearby canals and vegetation.

The bedrooms are distributed vertically to provide both independence and connection for different generations of the family. The master bedroom is positioned at the rear for greater privacy, adjacent to a compact ancestral altar that reinforces the home’s cultural continuity.

Additional bedrooms occupy separate floors and are linked through the central skylight void and carefully positioned openings that maintain airflow and visual connection without compromising intimacy. A green painted steel bridge crossing the second floor references the lightweight bamboo bridges typical of the Mekong Delta, transforming circulation into both a climatic device and a nostalgic architectural gesture.

Throughout the house, natural light is carefully filtered and softened. On the ground floor, bamboo louvers beneath a polycarbonate roof diffuse the strong southeastern sunlight, drawing inspiration from woven traditional blinds. Upstairs, the preserved star apple tree casts changing shadows across the interior, creating a quieter relationship between architecture and nature.

Environmental performance is embedded into the project through passive design strategies and locally sourced materials. Staggered roof slopes improve heat dissipation and accelerate rainwater drainage during tropical storms, while cross ventilation and vertical airflow eliminate the need for daytime artificial cooling.

The material palette combines insulated metal roofing, bamboo louvers, steel and timber staircases, recycled breeze blocks, terrazzo surfaces, and locally available finishes selected for affordability, durability, and low environmental impact. Rather than presenting sustainability as a technological statement, the project integrates it into everyday living conditions and construction logic.

Architect Tran Cong Danh describes the house as an example of affordable contemporary housing aligned with the realities of Vietnamese family life. Through careful planning and passive environmental strategies, the project achieves spatial quality and climatic comfort without excess.

More than a minimalist urban residence, Hau Giang House becomes a reflection of contemporary life in the Mekong Delta, where architecture remains deeply connected to family rituals, tropical climate, and the cultural rhythms of Southern Vietnam.
