Eunkyung Lee casts the overlooked pauses of home in aluminium

In Lying on the floor, Seoul-based designer and sculptor Eunkyung Lee looks at the home as a place shaped by memory, routine and the body. Her first sculpture series gives form to the pauses that happen beyond a room’s intended use: the floor just inside an entrance, or the narrow space between pieces of furniture.

Resting in the spaces between

Lee begins with the familiar territory of home, which can feel at once private and shared. Its boundaries shift with experience, contracting to a single corner or extending across the whole house. Rather than focus on rooms as finished interiors, the work attends to these in-between spaces and the unplanned postures that appear within them.

An exhausted body may settle where no furniture has been designed to support it. These low, informal positions offer a brief release from the roles and routines of daily life. Lee treats them as a kind of shade within the home: an atmosphere retained in the body rather than a scene arranged for view.

Hand marks held in cast aluminium

The forms follow bodily movement instead of a prescribed function. Lee works the material by hand, allowing pressure and touch to leave marks in a sand mould. As aluminium solidifies in the mould, these traces become part of the finished surface, carrying a fleeting gesture into a lasting object.

Each piece records a different moment and changes in appearance as the viewer moves around it. The surfaces resist a single, fixed identity; what remains constant is the impression that the object has been shaped through contact.

A deliberate state of instability

The three forms rest on three legs, holding a subtle tension rather than seeking perfect balance. Their dimensions are 360 × 333 × 130 mm, 360 × 300 × 110 mm and 295 × 245 × 98 mm. With no single use assigned to them, they invite a temporary state of being: a place to lean, pause or simply remain.

Part of House of Practice

Lying on the floor was presented in House of Practice, an exhibition at TACT Anguk in Seoul from 15 to 18 July 2026. Curated and mentored by Giseok Kim, the exhibition brought together prototype furniture and objects by nine creators, each considering how home shapes memory, perception and everyday life.
