Kidz studio conceals sliding door within wall of books and records at Russian café

In Krasnodar, Russia, Kidz Studio has designed Biblioteka Coffee as an atmospheric café where books, vinyl records, and coffee are woven together through a contemporary interior shaped by the interplay of silence and sound.

Biblioteka Coffee has built its identity around three enduring passions: books, coffee, and vinyl records. For its latest location, Kidz Studio was invited to reinterpret that concept rather than simply replicate an existing formula. Working from the client’s vision while introducing a fresh architectural language, the design creates an immersive environment where every detail contributes to a coherent spatial narrative.

Instead of relying on decorative references, the project explores atmosphere as its primary design tool, shaping an experience that feels equally calm, social, and immersive.

The interior is structured around a simple conceptual contrast: silence and sound. Rather than functioning as literal themes, they become spatial metaphors that inform material choices, lighting, and movement throughout the café.

Warm timber surfaces introduce a sense of calm and softness, while metallic details add rhythm and precision. Together, these contrasting elements establish an interior that feels simultaneously intimate and energetic, reflecting the dual identity of a place where reading, listening, and conversation naturally coexist.

The material palette combines natural textures with contemporary finishes. Wood veneer wraps much of the interior, balanced by stainless steel planters, wall-mounted lighting, and unexpected industrial details. One of these, a metal mud grate, reappears above the coffee machine as an architectural feature, transforming an everyday object into part of the design language.

Lighting plays an equally important role. Bespoke fixtures developed specifically for the project create a layered atmosphere that shifts throughout the day, reinforcing the café’s calm yet vibrant character. Much of the furniture was custom designed by Kidz Studio, complemented by pieces sourced from local manufacturers.

The project reveals itself gradually through carefully integrated architectural gestures. A concealed sliding door disappears within a wall of books and vinyl records, preserving the continuity of the shelving while subtly separating public and service areas.

Throughout the interior, curved forms soften circulation. A sculptural bar counter welcomes visitors immediately upon entry, while illuminated lightboxes connect brighter and darker areas into a continuous spatial composition. Running quietly through the project is the abstract motif of a vinyl record’s needle trace, a subtle visual element that links different spaces and reinforces the café’s relationship with music.

Beyond its conceptual framework, the café is carefully organised around everyday comfort. Seating along the panoramic windows allows visitors to engage with the surrounding streetscape, while the warm glow of the interior invites pedestrians inside.

Rather than separating books, coffee, and vinyl into distinct experiences, Biblioteka Coffee brings them together within a single architectural environment. The result is a contemporary café where atmosphere, materiality, and thoughtful detailing transform everyday rituals into a slower and more immersive experience.
