López González stacks Casa Tlaloc as a vertical sequence of rituals in Xalapa

Casa Tlaloc approaches architecture as a measured negotiation with gravity. Set calmly within its site, the house rises in stacked layers, each level supporting the next with quiet inevitability. This vertical composition is not arbitrary but structured around the rhythms of daily life, where degrees of privacy are carefully stratified and expressed through height.

The project begins with a close reading of its environment. Solar orientation, topography, and the water cycle inform a precise architectural language. A grid defined by four bidirectional axes and square columns establishes order, while paired metallic supports allow for unobstructed spans. Cantilevered slabs extend outward as climatic devices, offering solar protection and collecting rainwater. Structure and performance merge into a single system, where form is the direct consequence of technical intent rather than decorative gesture.

At the base, the ground floor accommodates shared life in a sequence of open, interconnected spaces. A semicircle of mineral gravel frames a guayacán tree at its centre, anchoring the house in a living cycle of time marked by seasonal flowering. Toward the rear, a freestanding metal sink emerges from shadow as a monolithic presence, transforming a utilitarian function into a moment of ritual within the domestic landscape.

The first floor adopts a cruciform plan that organises three bedrooms around a central axis. The primary suite projects outward toward the urban horizon, while secondary rooms extend laterally toward the garden. This configuration ensures both autonomy and cohesion, allowing each space to remain distinct while part of a unified whole. Interiors are rendered in a restrained palette of white, creating a suspended atmosphere where light and memory take precedence.

Above, the upper level withdraws from the perimeter, forming a continuous living and studio space defined by openness and light. Large terraces extend beyond the interior, lifting daily life above the surrounding context and framing distant views of dense vegetation. Here, architecture dissolves into landscape, turning the horizon into an integral part of the spatial experience.

Crowning the composition, a compact technical volume concludes the structure with clarity. Its austere presence houses the operational systems of the building, presented without concealment. In doing so, Casa Tlaloc affirms a consistent architectural stance in which utility is not hidden but elevated, and where necessity itself becomes a form of expression.
