Tactical Urbanism Now! 2026

PROTOTYPING THE FUTURE OF PUBLIC SPACE

Terraviva announces Tactical Urbanism Now 2026, the latest edition of its international architecture and urban design competition exploring how small scale, temporary interventions can reshape the everyday city. Positioned at the intersection of experimentation and urgency, the competition calls on designers to respond to contemporary urban challenges through tactical, lightweight, and highly adaptable spatial strategies.

With a total prize fund of up to ten thousand US dollars and an international jury of architects, educators, and urban practitioners, Tactical Urbanism Now 2026 reinforces the growing relevance of tactical design as a catalyst for long term urban transformation.

URBAN ACUPUNCTURE FOR THE CONTEMPORARY CITY

The competition invites participants to consider tactical urbanism as a form of urban acupuncture. Through precise and targeted actions, these interventions activate overlooked spaces and release latent energy within the urban fabric. Rather than proposing permanent solutions, designers are encouraged to test ideas in real contexts, allowing small moves to trigger broader social, spatial, and environmental change.

Projects may address a wide range of urban conditions, including traffic dominated streets, overheated public squares, residual plots, forgotten pathways, or fragmented public realms. The focus remains on spaces shaped by everyday life, where design can operate as a tool for immediate impact and future speculation.

DESIGNING THROUGH PROTOTYPES

At the core of Tactical Urbanism Now 2026 is the idea of the prototype. Proposals are expected to function as flexible and testable systems rather than finished objects. By working with low cost materials, adaptable structures, and participatory approaches, projects should demonstrate how tactical interventions can respond quickly to local conditions while informing long term urban strategies.

Whether engaging climate stress, reclaiming space for pedestrians, or strengthening community relationships, the competition seeks design thinking grounded in reality and open to evolution over time.

A GLOBAL PLATFORM FOR EMERGING URBAN IDEAS

Participants are free to select any site worldwide, reinforcing the competition’s global scope and its interest in diverse urban contexts. Submissions are evaluated by an international jury including Maryam Mahvash, Mark Balzar, Cecilia Galimberti, Camilo Palma, Andrea Molina Cuadro, Samuel Padilla Llano, Lisbet Ahon Vasquez, and Diogo Lopez Teixeira, whose collective expertise spans architecture, landscape, education, and urban research.

Winning and selected projects will be published across Terraviva’s international platforms, amplifying visibility and contributing to contemporary discourse on tactical urbanism and public space innovation.

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Tactical Urbanism Now 2026 invites architects, designers, and urban thinkers to rethink how cities can change through small, strategic actions. In an era of rapid urban transformation and environmental uncertainty, the competition positions tactical design not as a temporary fix, but as a powerful method for imagining more inclusive, resilient, and dynamic public spaces.

Further details and submission guidelines are available via Terraviva’s official competition platform.
