Soundscapes in Structure

DESIGNING THE FUTURE OF OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE ARCHITECTURE

Soundscapes in Structure is the theme of the Museum of Outdoor Arts Design and Build Competition, an annual national initiative now entering its seventh edition. Hosted by the Museum of Outdoor Arts in Greenwood Village, Colorado, the competition invites conceptual design proposals from creatively focused collegiate students across the United States, including those studying art, architecture, landscape architecture, design, engineering, and related disciplines.

This year’s challenge calls for the design of a contemporary amphitheater bandshell that seamlessly integrates acoustic performance with a strong architectural identity. Participants are encouraged to explore how structure, materiality, and spatial form can shape sound while creating a visually compelling landmark for outdoor cultural experiences. The competition is open with no entry fee, lowering barriers to participation and fostering broad creative engagement.

DESIGN VISION AND CONCEPT

Soundscapes in Structure pushes participants to think beyond conventional performance architecture. The amphitheater bandshell is envisioned not only as a functional acoustic device, but as a sculptural presence that enhances audience experience and interaction with the landscape. Proposals are expected to balance technical rigor with expressive design, addressing sound projection, spatial enclosure, and the relationship between performer, audience, and environment. Innovation, interdisciplinary thinking, and collaboration are strongly encouraged throughout the design process.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

The competition offers a total cash prize award of 24,000 US dollars, recognizing outstanding conceptual design excellence. The first place team will receive 10,000 dollars, followed by second and third place awards of 7,500 and 5,000 dollars respectively. An additional honorable mention award of 1,500 dollars will be granted. For collaborative submissions, prize money will be distributed evenly among all team members. Beyond financial recognition, finalists gain national exposure and the opportunity to further develop their ideas through video presentations evaluated by the jury.

JURY PANEL

Submissions will be reviewed by a distinguished jury of professionals from architecture, landscape design, and cultural leadership. The panel includes Robin Ault, senior principal and design director at Fentress Studios, a Populous company known for large scale civic and cultural projects. John Birkey, principal and partner at Norris Design, contributes extensive experience in landscape architecture and urban environments. Cynthia Madden Leitner, president and co founder of the Museum of Outdoor Arts, brings a curatorial and institutional perspective rooted in the integration of art and public space. Together, the jury ensures a balanced and rigorous evaluation process grounded in both creative vision and professional expertise.

COMPETITION TIMELINE

The competition was announced in late September 2025, with the official opening and publication of the design brief following in October. Team pre registration closes on February 1, 2026, although pre registration is optional and not required for participation. Final submissions are due by April 26, 2026, with finalist proposals selected in May. Shortlisted teams will be invited to produce video presentations in June, leading to jury deliberations and the public announcement of winning entries in July 2026.

ELIGIBILITY AND PARTICIPATION

The Design and Build Competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in United States universities, as well as recent graduates within one year of the competition opening date. Participants must be studying in relevant creative or technical fields, and submissions may be made individually, as teams, or as part of an academic studio or course. Collaborative approaches are highly encouraged. While United States citizenship is required to claim cash prizes, non US citizens are welcome to participate provided they are enrolled in, or recently graduated from, a US based institution.
