REIMAGINING CONTEMPORARY STUDENT LIVING IN THE HEART OF MILAN
Milan Design Loft is an international interior design competition set within Città Studi, one of Milan’s most dynamic academic neighborhoods and home to the Politecnico di Milano. Known for its strong intellectual atmosphere and architectural legacy, the district provides a compelling backdrop for a project that explores the future of student living through spatial innovation and design intelligence.
At the center of the competition is the renovation of a distinctive loft defined by double height volumes, abundant natural light, and a pronounced architectural character. Participants are invited to radically rethink the existing apartment, transforming it into a contemporary living environment tailored to the needs of an architecture student. Beyond visual impact, the challenge encourages a deep reflection on everyday life, including studying, collaborative work, rest, and social interaction, all within a compact residential setting.
DESIGN CHALLENGE AND CONCEPT
Working with limited dimensions is a fundamental aspect of the Milan Design Loft competition. Rather than a restriction, spatial constraint becomes an opportunity to explore inventive interior strategies, adaptable layouts, and multifunctional solutions. Designers are granted full creative freedom to reorganize the apartment, reinterpret the mezzanine, and experiment with materials, furniture systems, and lighting concepts. The objective is to create an interior that balances expression and practicality, capable of supporting the evolving rhythms of contemporary student life in one of Europe’s leading architectural capitals.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
The competition offers a total cash prize of 9,500 USD, recognizing excellence in interior architecture and spatial innovation. The winning project will receive a first prize of 3,000 euros, followed by second and third prizes of 2,000 euros and 1,000 euros respectively. In addition to monetary awards, selected participants will receive golden mentions, honorable mentions, and finalist recognition, with projects featured across Terraviva’s official communication channels, providing international visibility within the global design community.
Participants are required to submit a single A1 horizontal panel presenting the design proposal, accompanied by a concise written description of between 250 and 500 words. The submitted material should clearly communicate the conceptual approach, spatial strategy, and design intentions behind the project.
INTERNATIONAL JURY
Projects will be evaluated by an international jury composed of architects, educators, and designers from leading institutions and studios worldwide. The panel includes Christian Gasparini of NAT Office, Chiara Sangermani from Politecnico di Milano, Hisham Youssef of Soochow University, Han Kuo of Supra Simplicities, Margaux Bitton of Studio Gomar, Dave Edwards from The Bartlett at UCL, Olga Skoczylas from Lublin University of Technology, and Enrique Iriso Pascual of FILO Arquitectos. Their diverse backgrounds ensure a rigorous and globally informed evaluation process.
