With BARRAQ, Indian design studio MUGEN introduces its first lighting collection through a series of sculptural luminaires carved entirely from solid alabaster. Drawing inspiration from the shifting forms of lava clouds and the fleeting energy of lightning, the collection transforms moments of natural turbulence into quiet, luminous objects.
Each piece is defined by softly rounded silhouettes, narrowed midsections, and layered bases that echo the billowing formations of cooling volcanic matter. Rather than reproducing nature literally, the collection distills its movement and atmosphere into a refined architectural language of light and stone.

At the heart of the collection is alabaster, a material celebrated for its unique translucency and subtle geological markings. When illuminated, the stone reveals delicate veins and tonal variations that resemble traces of ash, water, and ancient mineral formations embedded within the earth.
The creamy off white surfaces become active participants in the design, allowing light to diffuse gently through the material and giving each luminaire a distinctive visual character. No two pieces are identical, as the natural composition of the stone determines the final expression of every object.

BARRAQ positions carving not merely as a manufacturing technique but as a process of uncovering the inherent qualities of the material. Every cut, chisel mark, and abrasion records the interaction between artisan and stone, gradually transforming a dense block into fluid organic contours.
The collection reflects a growing interest in hand carved stone objects within contemporary collectible design, while maintaining a strong connection to traditional craftsmanship. Rather than imposing form onto the material, the design allows the character of the stone to guide the final outcome.

Balancing functional lighting with sculptural presence, BARRAQ occupies a space between object and atmosphere. The collection captures the quiet tension between permanence and movement, translating the ephemeral qualities of clouds, geological pressure, and elemental forces into enduring forms.
Through its interplay of light, material, and craftsmanship, BARRAQ offers a contemporary interpretation of natural phenomena, transforming alabaster into a medium that is both tactile and luminous.
