AR-AR, MEC and Fiallo Atelier embed Water Stories shelters in Colombia’s cloud forest

Water Stories begins with water not as a surface or object, but as an ecological system. In the Andean and high-Andean forest, moisture suspended in the air is captured by ferns, epiphytes and mosses before moving slowly through the canopy, soil and watersheds. This cycle underpins the project by AR-AR Martínez Arquitectura y Paisaje, MEC Arquitectura and Fiallo Atelier, which combines forest restoration with a series of short-stay contemplation shelters in Villamaría, Colombia.

The site lies along the Ruta del Cóndor, within the Río Claro sub-basin of the Chinchiná River basin. Previously affected by logging and extensive cattle ranching, the property is being reforested through three distinct restoration zones, each responding to differences in altitude, topography, vegetation and soil condition.

The Cloud Lookout Forest occupies the upper western part of the property, where soil degraded by grazing requires pioneer species to begin rebuilding fertility. On the eastern side, the Creek Forest benefits from cooler conditions, stronger canopy cover and proximity to a stream, while the lower Bird Forest contains the most established native vegetation and sits at the confluence of watercourses used by local and migratory birds.

Architecture is introduced as part of this restoration strategy rather than as a separate destination. The shelters provide temporary accommodation, but they are also intended as places for reflection and environmental education, allowing visitors to experience the ecological processes being restored around them.

The steep terrain was studied through repeated physical site models. Rather than flattening the mountain to accommodate conventional building platforms, the design team used this process to position the shelters within the existing slope, turning each structure into a lookout that remains closely tied to the surrounding vegetation.

The two built expressions visible in the project imagery, the Bird Cabin and the Lookout Cabin, use compact forms that sit lightly within the landscape. Their role is less to dominate the site than to intensify awareness of mist, vegetation, topography and changing light, placing human occupation within the broader work of ecological recovery.

By linking accommodation to reforestation, the project proposes an economic model in which short stays support the long-term restoration of the cloud forest. Water Stories ultimately treats architecture as one component within a larger environmental process, framing the mountain as something to inhabit temporarily, understand and help recover.
