Designed by Shangceng Design, this 1,000-square-metre residence in Beijing interprets French interiors through light, proportion, and contemporary family life rather than historical ornament.

French interiors are often associated with decorative mouldings, gilded finishes, and grand chandeliers. For A Modern French Home, Shangceng Design takes a different approach, translating the atmosphere of French domesticity into a contemporary family residence where ritual, comfort, and daily life coexist naturally.

Designed for three generations, the 1,000-square-metre house unfolds across five levels, balancing shared living spaces with private retreats. Throughout the home, natural light becomes an active architectural element, moving across colonnades, arched openings, and softly textured surfaces to shape the character of each room.

The second floor forms the social heart of the house. A double-height living room is organized around a symmetrical composition, where a sapphire-blue velvet sofa and emerald-green armchair establish a restrained yet expressive colour palette. Classical mouldings and architectural orders introduce rhythm without overwhelming the interior, allowing the space to feel both elegant and welcoming.

The living room flows directly into an open kitchen designed for both Chinese and Western cooking. Hidden appliances preserve the clarity of the interior while generous dining areas accommodate frequent gatherings with family and friends. Nearby, a sunlit tea corner provides a quieter setting where everyday rituals unfold at a slower pace.

While the communal areas establish the home’s architectural identity, the private rooms express the personalities of their occupants through carefully composed palettes.

The grandparents’ suite introduces a contemporary interpretation of French Chinoiserie, combining vibrant tones with calm, comfortable materials. Upstairs, the children’s bedrooms adopt contrasting identities: one grounded in charcoal tones with textured surfaces and integrated display shelving, the other composed around soft pinks and warm neutrals that create a lighter atmosphere. A shared lounge between the rooms functions equally as a music room, play area, and informal family gathering space, reflecting the changing rhythms of everyday life.

The upper level is dedicated to the master suite, where muted greys, creamy whites, and deep green accents create a calm retreat from the more active family spaces below. Separate dressing rooms respond to the different routines of each owner while remaining visually connected, balancing individuality with shared living.

Elsewhere, the lower ground floor extends the domestic programme beyond traditional living spaces. A home cinema, billiards room, and fitness area transform the basement into a place for recreation, while the staircase linking every level becomes more than circulation, encouraging the casual encounters that define family life.

At one end of the house, a sunroom establishes the closest relationship between architecture and nature. Connected directly to the courtyard, the space is intentionally left open to changing activities, from reading and afternoon tea to quiet moments overlooking the garden.

Across the project, architecture avoids relying on decorative excess. Instead, proportion, natural light, carefully selected materials, and restrained colour compositions shape an atmosphere where French elegance is expressed as a way of living rather than a stylistic reference. The result is a contemporary home in which everyday routines, family relationships, and the changing seasons become the true measure of luxury.
