Kaira Looro Architecture Competition 2026

DESIGNING HOPE THROUGH COMMUNITY ARCHITECTURE

Across cultures and continents, communities are shaped by the spaces where people gather, exchange ideas, and build shared meaning. These places preserve collective memory, nurture identity, and transform aspiration into action. Yet in many rural regions of Sub Saharan Africa, the absence of such shared infrastructure continues to limit social, cultural, and economic growth.

It is within this context that the Kaira Looro Architecture Competition 2026 emerges, inviting architects, students, designers, engineers, and young professionals from around the world to envision a new Community Center in southern Senegal. More than a building, the project is conceived as a catalyst for inclusion, resilience, and long term social development, offering architecture as a tool for empowerment and dignity.

ARCHITECTURE AS A CATALYST FOR COLLECTIVE LIFE

The proposed Community Center is envisioned as a vibrant and welcoming place, capable of hosting educational activities, cultural events, social gatherings, and entrepreneurial initiatives. It is intended to become a living heart of the community, supporting learning, creativity, dialogue, and cooperation across generations.

This space is not merely functional but symbolic. It represents a shared future built through participation, cultural exchange, and collective care. The project must respond to real needs while reinforcing a sense of belonging and ownership among local residents.

BUILDING WITH RESPONSIBILITY AND HUMANITY

At the core of the 2026 edition lies a strong commitment to humanitarian architecture. The project must be conceived as a self built intervention, avoiding heavy machinery and highly specialized labor. Emphasis is placed on natural materials, simple construction techniques, and sustainable solutions that respect both people and environment.

Architecture here becomes a process rather than an object. It is a means to empower local communities, transfer knowledge, and create long lasting social value. Every design decision should contribute to resilience, accessibility, and environmental responsibility.

A NON PROFIT COMPETITION WITH GLOBAL IMPACT

Kaira Looro stands as the only fully non profit international architecture competition. All proceeds are entirely allocated to the humanitarian projects of Balouo Salo, an organization committed to improving access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure in some of the most vulnerable regions of Sub Saharan Africa.

Participating in the competition therefore means more than competing for recognition. It means actively contributing to real change on the ground, where architecture becomes an instrument of solidarity and hope.

AN INTERNATIONAL JURY OF ARCHITECTURAL EXCELLENCE

The 2026 edition brings together one of the most distinguished juries in the history of the competition, featuring internationally acclaimed architects whose work has shaped contemporary architectural discourse. Among them are Kengo Kuma, David Adjaye, Benedetta Tagliabue, Amanda Levete, Manuel Aires Mateus, Giancarlo Mazzanti, Mario Cucinella, Urko Sanchez, Raul Pantaleo, Agostino Ghirardelli, Emmanuelle Moureaux, Mohamed Amine Siana, Saad El Kabbaj, and Driss Kettani.

Their presence elevates the competition to a global platform and ensures a rigorous and visionary evaluation of all proposals.

PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND GLOBAL RECOGNITION

Beyond financial awards, Kaira Looro 2026 offers a unique pathway into professional practice. Winning participants will gain access to prestigious internships at internationally renowned studios including Kengo Kuma and Associates in Tokyo, Benedetta Tagliabue EMBT in Barcelona, Adjaye Associates in New York, and SBGA Blengini Ghirardelli in Milan.

These opportunities allow emerging architects to engage directly with global practice, transforming ideas into real-world experience.

AWARDS AND INTERNATIONAL VISIBILITY

The competition offers a total prize fund of 10,530 US dollars. The first prize includes a monetary award, a professional internship with Kengo Kuma and Associates, and the realization of the project as a humanitarian intervention. The second and third prizes combine financial awards with internship opportunities at leading international studios. In addition, selected projects will receive special mentions, be featured as finalists, and gain publication in major architectural platforms and in the official competition book.

KEY DATES AND PARTICIPATION

Registration opens on January 8, 2026, with multiple phases leading up to the final submission deadline on June 7, 2026. The jury evaluation will take place in late June, and the winners will be announced on July 7, 2026. Participation is open to individuals and teams, provided that at least one team member is under the age of thirty five.

DESIGNING FOR DIGNITY

Kaira Looro 2026 is more than a competition. It is an invitation to rethink the social role of architecture and to place creativity at the service of humanity. Through collective effort, ethical design, and shared responsibility, architecture becomes a powerful agent of transformation.

For architects seeking to align talent with purpose, Kaira Looro offers a rare opportunity to design not only buildings, but futures.

The total cash prize amounts to 10,530 USD.
