JOTAJOTA+ turns a mattress store into a sequence of domestic interiors

A retail space is rarely associated with intimacy. In this project, JOTAJOTA+ challenges that assumption by rethinking the mattress store as a spatial narrative drawn from the logic of the home. Rather than presenting products as objects on display, the design constructs a continuous interior landscape where visitors move, pause, and test each piece within an atmosphere that recalls everyday domestic life.

The project unfolds as a free flowing sequence of environments, where circulation is not imposed but discovered. Visitors are invited to wander through the store along paths that gently shift in direction and scale, allowing each encounter with the mattresses to feel personal and unstructured. This sense of autonomy transforms the act of shopping into a form of inhabitation, where the boundary between commercial and domestic space begins to dissolve.

A continuous wooden perimeter defines the spatial order. Along this edge, headboards and information are integrated into a unified architectural system, creating both a visual backdrop and a functional layer. Within this frame, privacy is subtly constructed through changes in flooring and the presence of suspended elements that modulate views and movement.

The floor becomes an active device in shaping the experience. Large format neutral tiles establish a calm and continuous ground, while inserted yellow carpets mark distinct zones that evoke different domestic settings. These softer surfaces introduce both visual warmth and a tactile shift, reinforcing the sense of entering a series of rooms rather than remaining within a single commercial hall.

Above, sinuous suspended tracks carry curtains that can open or close perspectives. These elements operate simultaneously as spatial dividers and atmospheric filters, allowing the space to contract into intimate enclaves or expand into broader visual connections. The interplay between exposure and concealment creates moments where visitors can test the mattresses in relative privacy, without fully disconnecting from the larger environment.

The project is anchored by a series of clear architectural gestures. At the threshold, a bold yellow moulding frames the façade, paired with a sheet metal stair that introduces a diagonal movement from the street into the interior. This angled entry not only captures attention but also establishes the dynamic logic that continues throughout the space.

Inside, the choreography of flooring and suspended elements reinforces this initial gesture, guiding the visitor through a layered sequence of experiences. Each transition is subtle yet deliberate, shaping perception without resorting to rigid partitions or overt signage.

By allowing visitors to define their own routes and rhythms, the store becomes less a place of transaction and more a temporary extension of domestic life. The architecture does not dictate behaviour but supports it, surrounding the visitor with a series of environments that reveal the comfort and character of each product.

In this way, JOTAJOTA+ reframes retail as an experiential condition. The project suggests that intimacy, usually reserved for private interiors, can be translated into commercial space through careful control of movement, material, and atmosphere.
