Concrete Wing House on São Miguel Island

Casa CR emerges from a rare and quietly powerful decision. Its clients, a couple in their eighties, chose not to renovate or retreat, but to begin again by building a new home. That act alone set the tone for the project. Rather than nostalgia or excess, the architecture responds with clarity, restraint, and respect for a life already fully lived.

Set on the southern coast of São Miguel Island, the site is shaped by basalt boulders, sparse vegetation, and uneven ground. The landscape is raw and resistant, defined more by geology than by gesture. Within this context, the house settles lightly, almost hovering above the terrain. Its elongated form reads as a single, suspended plane, touching the land with care rather than force.

The idea of the wing emerged early and naturally. One of the owners was a former Air Force pilot during the colonial war, and the architecture quietly absorbs that personal history. The reference is never literal. Instead, it appears as an abstracted gesture, a long concrete canopy extending over glass, creating the sensation of lift and horizontal movement across the site.

This canopy defines the house both structurally and atmospherically. It shelters the interior while framing views of the garden, the volcanic terrain, and the distant horizon. The building does not compete with its surroundings. It glides above them, offering protection while remaining open and exposed.

The entire house unfolds on a single level, reinforcing an architecture of ease and continuity. Spaces flow into one another without hierarchy or interruption, supporting a calm and functional daily life. Transparency is central to this experience. Large glazed surfaces dissolve the boundary between inside and outside, allowing light, air, and landscape to move freely through the house.

At the heart of the plan, a tropical courtyard anchors the domestic environment. More than a visual feature, it acts as a climatic and spatial device, drawing daylight deep into the interior and enabling natural cross ventilation. The courtyard ensures that nature is never peripheral. It is always present, always felt.

Inside, wood lines the interiors, softening the rigor of the concrete structure and bringing warmth to the spaces of daily use. The material palette is deliberately limited, allowing texture, light, and shadow to take precedence. Nothing is concealed or ornamental. Every element serves a clear purpose, contributing to an atmosphere of quiet comfort.

From any point within the house, the exterior remains visible. The garden, the courtyard, and the horizon are always within sight, reinforcing a continuous relationship with the surrounding world. This visual openness mirrors the architectural ethos of the project, one rooted in honesty and legibility.

Casa CR is an essential house. It avoids spectacle and unnecessary formal gestures, choosing instead to focus on proportion, light, and material presence. Its strength lies in its restraint. Matter, light, and air are carefully balanced, offering a space designed for slowness, reflection, and clarity.

In a landscape shaped by time and erosion, the house proposes another rhythm of living. One that values serenity over statement, and depth over display.
