The Floating Prefab House: Staying together when the flood comes

Between early and late 2025, Viet Nam faced an unprecedented sequence of storms that flooded much of the country. What was once understood as a seasonal disruption has become a continuous condition, forcing communities to confront a difficult choice between safety and staying on ancestral land. This project begins from a clear premise: resilience should not require displacement.

The Floating Prefab House proposes a way of living with water rather than retreating from it. Conceived as an adaptable dwelling, it responds to changing environmental conditions while allowing families to remain rooted in place.

SEASONALLY ADAPTIVE ARCHITECTURE

The house is designed to shift seamlessly between two states. Under normal conditions, it rests lightly on the ground, functioning as a modest garden pavilion or weekend retreat that blends into its surroundings. When floods arrive, the structure releases from its base and rises with the water, supported by an integrated buoyancy system. The transformation is gradual and automatic, turning the house into a secure refuge without the need for evacuation.

An isosceles triangular geometry gives the structure a low center of gravity and strong resistance to wind and movement. The compact volume avoids overhanging elements, reducing the risk of roof uplift during storms. Stability here is achieved not through mass, but through proportion, balance, and aerodynamic clarity.

LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION AND BUOYANCY

The building relies on lightweight, high performance materials that combine insulation, sound control, and flotation. Beneath the structure, sealed HDPE drums act as durable pontoons, providing reliable buoyancy and impact resistance during prolonged flooding. The system is designed for repetition, durability, and ease of maintenance rather than emergency use alone.

Inside, the house functions as an autonomous shelter during flood season. Dry storage and a compact backup kitchen allow food to be preserved for up to ten days, with cooking possible even without electricity. Sleeping arrangements are flexible, comfortably accommodating two people in daily use and expanding to house larger numbers in emergencies.

Sanitation is managed through a floating septic system that moves with the structure, protecting hygiene and surrounding water quality. Energy is supplied by solar panels optimized for limited sunlight, while a dedicated water tank ensures access to clean water throughout extended flooding.

With a construction cost positioned within reach of many households, the Floating Prefab House is conceived not as an experimental object but as a repeatable model. More than a technical response, it reframes architecture as a means of emotional and cultural continuity.

In an era of climatic uncertainty, the project suggests that resilience is not only about survival. It is about staying together, preserving a sense of home, and finding stability within change.
