International Architecture Competition Announced for the New Museum of Contemporary Art of Panama

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Panama – MAC Panamá has officially announced the launch of an international architecture competition for the design of its new museum building, marking a pivotal moment in the institution’s history and in Panama’s growing cultural presence within the Latin American and global context.

With more than sixty years dedicated to the promotion of modern and contemporary art, MAC Panamá enters a transformative new chapter focused on strengthening its role as a regional platform for artistic creation, education, and critical discourse. The new museum building is envisioned as a civic and cultural landmark that engages directly with the city, creating a dynamic interface between art, architecture, and the public realm.

A CULTURAL INFRASTRUCTURE OPEN TO THE CITY

Conceived as more than a container for exhibitions, the future headquarters of MAC Panamá seeks to operate as an open cultural infrastructure that encourages social interaction and urban vitality. The competition calls for architectural proposals that respond sensitively to their context while offering innovative spatial solutions capable of supporting contemporary artistic practices and public engagement.

The museum emphasizes values of inclusion, transparency, social responsibility, and environmental awareness, inviting architects and multidisciplinary teams from around the world to interpret these principles through design. Sustainability, adaptability, and a strong relationship with the surrounding urban fabric are central to the vision for the new building.

AN OPEN AND INTERNATIONAL DESIGN PROCESS

The competition is structured as an open and anonymous process conducted in two stages, ensuring fairness and architectural excellence. An international jury composed of professionals with recognized experience in architecture, contemporary art, and museum design will oversee the selection process.

Through this initiative, MAC Panamá reinforces its long term commitment to sustainable urban development and the strengthening of Panama’s cultural infrastructure. The competition also positions the country as a point of convergence for international dialogue on architecture, art, and territory, encouraging global participation and exchange.
