Japanese designer So Koizumi, founder of SO KOIZUMI DESIGN, has introduced Resonique, a ladder that reimagines a familiar utilitarian object through the visual language of musical instruments. Conceived as a hybrid between functional structure and sculptural form, the piece merges the structural logic of ladders with the elegant curves associated with brass instruments.

Rather than treating the ladder as a purely practical tool, Koizumi approaches it as a spatial object capable of shaping atmosphere. The project explores how functional necessity can coexist with expressive form, allowing an everyday object to assume a quiet yet distinctive presence within an interior environment.
In Resonique, the linear stability inherent to ladder construction is combined with fluid, instrument like curves. Polished stainless steel pipes trace continuous lines that rise through the structure, producing a rhythm of arcs and verticals reminiscent of brass wind instruments. This interplay between precision and softness allows the ladder to operate simultaneously as a practical device and a sculptural element within the surrounding space.

Particular attention is given to the joints connecting the pipes. Koizumi developed bespoke details inspired by piston valves used in brass instruments, transforming technical connections into visually expressive components. These elements function not only as structural nodes but also as subtle references to musical mechanics, reinforcing the conceptual link between architecture, object design and sound.
Resonique emerged from a collaborative project organized within the new employee training program of the Japanese design and construction company Tanseisha Co., Ltd. Working alongside newly hired team members, Koizumi guided a process that encouraged participants to return to the fundamentals of making, beginning with personal curiosity and individual interests.

The project invited each member of the group to contribute their perspective, gradually shaping a collective design language through dialogue and experimentation. The resulting object reflects this shared process, demonstrating how collaboration can generate unexpected forms that would be difficult to achieve through an individual approach.
The name Resonique combines the words resonance and unique. The title reflects both the collective exchange that informed the project and the singular character of the finished piece. Positioned between furniture, sculpture and design experiment, the ladder ultimately proposes a subtle shift in perception, transforming a functional structure into an object capable of carrying spatial presence and poetic resonance.
