TerraViva has launched a call for ideas inviting entrants to rethink the Sant’Anna district in Gorizia, a northeastern Italian town set at the hinge between Italy and Slovenia. With cultures and languages overlapping at the border, the competition frames Gorizia as a city ready to open a fresh chapter in its urban story.
The task is to develop a comprehensive masterplan for one of the town’s largest residential areas, proposing a new identity for Sant’Anna as a contemporary place to live. Rather than treating the district as a peripheral neighbourhood, participants are encouraged to imagine it as a testing ground for urban innovation, where design can connect ecology and community in tangible ways.

WHAT THE JURY IS LOOKING FOR
The winning proposal should be an original, high-quality urban scheme that responds to the district’s social context, improves accessibility, and supports multifunctional everyday use. Submissions are expected to repair fragmented urban pieces, strengthen connections across the area, and elevate the network of parks and open spaces through sustainable and inclusive strategies. Projects that demonstrate particular attention to public space and landscape quality will be especially valued.
ELIGIBILITY
The competition is open broadly to architects, designers, students, urbanists, engineers, artists, enthusiasts, and anyone engaged with architecture and design.

The jury includes German Fuenmayor (founder of architecture and urban planning studio Piuarch), Luca Mezzorana (head of the Public Works Department, Municipality of Gorizia), Olivia Gori (co-founder of architecture office and research platform ECÒL), Alberto Cervesato (research fellow at UNIUD), Anna Cabrera Hens (architect and urbanist at Barcelona City Council), Fabio Naselli (associate professor at Epoka University), Nasrin Mohiti Asli (co-founder of architect collective Orizzontale), and Matteo Pettinaroli (co-founder of urban design firm Needle Agopuntura Urbana).
