L2C Arquitetura completes terraced House in Barros on steep Braga site.

On a steep plot in Barros, Braga, this hillside house transforms a six metre slope into a sequence of terraces that open towards the landscape. Conceived as a quiet response to gravity rather than a conquest of it, the project models the terrain into inhabitable plateaus, allowing architecture and topography to breathe as one continuous organism.

The Barros site resists easy occupation. It is defined by sharp inclinations and an irregular geometry that challenges conventional domestic planning. To the east, a robust stone wall lifts the gaze upward; to the west, the surrounding streets establish a firm urban edge. What remained between these boundaries was an urban void, a residual terrain awaiting a measured intervention.

Rather than imposing a singular gesture onto the hillside, the project approaches the slope as a collaborator. The design begins with the act of modeling the ground itself, carving terraces and plateaus that mediate between chaos and order. Architecture emerges from this topographic negotiation, not as an object placed upon the land, but as a continuation of its contours.

The building takes shape as two horizontal planes resting in staggered alignment along the incline. Their simplicity reinforces a sense of calm, while their displacement generates movement and spatial depth. The volumes open decisively towards the south and west, orienting the interior towards sunlight and unobstructed views. Large openings frame the landscape as living compositions, allowing the exterior to enter the daily rituals of domestic life.

There is no rigid confrontation with gravity. Instead, the house settles into the hillside, establishing a balanced dialogue between containment and openness. The exterior spaces are carefully hierarchised, extending the living areas toward terraces and a pool that becomes a focal point beneath the sky of Braga.

Material choices are deliberately restrained. The architecture returns to essential forms and muted finishes, allowing the landscape and light to take precedence. The pitched roofs act as a subtle mimicry of the surrounding built fabric, enabling the house to merge discreetly with its context. Retaining walls align with the street, stitching the intervention into the urban framework with precision and care.

Access is provided from Rua de Barros. A ramp negotiates the six metre change in level, marking the transition from the public realm to the private refuge. This gradual ascent offers shifting perspectives of the site, reinforcing the sense that arrival is not abrupt but experiential.

More than a house on a steep plot, the project proposes a habitable equilibrium between inclination and horizon. It translates the constraints of topography into spatial opportunity, transforming a challenging slope into a place of measured calm and inhabitable harmony.
