Nestled along the historic banks of the Qinhuai River in Nanjing, the Big Red Crayfish project transforms a 2,000-square-metre heritage site into a vibrant gastronomic and commercial destination. Designed by Dayi Design, this adaptive reuse initiative preserves the cultural essence of centuries-old structures while introducing contemporary vitality that resonates with the city’s layered history.

At the heart of the intervention lies a series of sinuous steel staircases that ascend from the first to the fourth floors, linking previously isolated buildings into a unified ensemble. Their sinuous forms recall a protective dragon from Chinese mythology, while the vivid Chinese red hue reinforces the project’s signature “Big Red Crayfish” theme. These striking elements not only serve practical functions, including fire escapes and weather-protected logistics routes, but also create a dynamic visual landmark that draws visitors toward immersive culinary experiences. The staircases offer elevated perspectives of the nearby Dabaoen Temple, enriching the site’s spatial narrative and fostering a sense of discovery.

The design masterfully juxtaposes sleek metal and expansive glass with simplified classical silhouettes, embodying a distinctive “Cyber Chinese Style”. This fusion layers ancient aesthetic sensibilities with futuristic undertones, generating a contemporary dialogue that deepens the site’s cultural resonance. The result is an environment where tradition and innovation coexist in harmony, enhancing the visitor’s sensory journey.

Throughout construction, a commitment to sustainability and respect for the original fabric guided every decision.Antique doors and Taihu stones were repurposed with care: doors turned into translucent glass screens, stones rearranged as functional barriers, minimizing intervention while maximizing adaptive reuse. New additions remain non-invasive, ensuring the site’s historical integrity remains intact and adaptable for future generations.

Big Red Crayfish exemplifies a thoughtful approach to heritage revitalization in China, where preservation meets contemporary functionality to create spaces that are both timeless and forward-looking. In doing so, it breathes new life into Nanjing’s storied riverside, inviting a new chapter in the city’s enduring cultural dialogue.
