The Arts Campus Kunst As establishes a new civic landmark in the centre of Asse, consolidating a growing constellation of cultural institutions into a coherent urban ensemble. Conceived as an L shaped volume, the building frames a protected chapel and completes the perimeter of the existing block, transforming what was once an inward looking enclave into a permeable and publicly oriented campus.

At the outer corner, a subtle setback forms a forecourt that signals the main entrance and mediates between street and garden. This small urban gesture extends the public realm, drawing visitors from the pavement into a revived cloister garden at the heart of the site. A covered gallery then guides movement along the green interior, connecting the campus to the neighbouring library and cultural centre. Through these calibrated transitions, the project reactivates heritage, opens the formerly closed block and weaves itself into the surrounding urban fabric.

The façades negotiate two distinct contexts with measured precision. Facing the inner court, a calm and open elevation composed of square prefabricated concrete elements provides a neutral backdrop to daily activity. The regular grid offers depth and shadow while maintaining a quiet architectural presence. Along the street, the rhythm becomes denser and the tone shifts towards a warmer pastel palette that resonates with the colours of adjacent buildings. The campus thus adopts a dual expression, civic and composed on the inside, more tactile and responsive on the urban edge.

Across both elevations, a layered system of deep reveals, generous square openings and finely articulated rhythms gives the building its spatial depth. Concrete structure is paired with soft ceramic tiles and an elegant blue framework, producing a material identity that is at once robust and nuanced. The interplay of texture and colour lends the campus a recognisable character without resorting to overt gesture, grounding it in proportion and craft.

Inside, a central foyer acts as a social condenser from which two parallel circulation routes extend. These spines connect ateliers, rehearsal rooms and shared spaces, organising a diverse programme within a clear spatial logic. Transparent vitrines, exhibition walls and generous landings transform corridors into places of encounter. Movement becomes an event in itself, offering moments to pause, observe and display work. The building encourages visibility and exchange, allowing artistic production to unfold in public view.

The Arts Campus Kunst As gathers multiple users under one roof while presenting a singular and confident urban face. By integrating heritage elements, landscape and contemporary architecture, it becomes a new cornerstone for a civic landscape in transformation. In Asse, culture is no longer dispersed across isolated institutions but anchored within a shared architectural framework that invites participation and reinforces the identity of the city centre.
