In Ningbo, MO Studio has completed a compact yet conceptually layered retail interior for Hennessy, commissioned by Ningbo Mingxuan Liquor Co., Ltd. Conceived as a “Silent Academy”, the 42 square metre space moves beyond the conventions of luxury retail to construct an immersive narrative around time, sensory perception, and cultural memory. Rather than foregrounding display, the project positions itself as an experiential medium, translating the heritage and craftsmanship of Cognac into spatial form.
Set within a commercial complex at Mingzhouli, the intervention responds to a local audience largely unfamiliar with Cognac. The design therefore operates pedagogically as well as atmospherically, guiding visitors through a sequence of impressions that evoke the essence of the brand. The ambition is not only to communicate identity, but to cultivate resonance, allowing knowledge to emerge through experience rather than explanation.

The project’s spatial limitations are precise. The façade could not be altered, and a structural column occupies the interior. Instead of resisting these conditions, MO Studio reframes them as narrative elements. The column is reimagined as a wooden stake supporting grapevines, an allusion to viticulture and, more abstractly, to the smoky depth imparted by oak barrel aging.
Walls taper inward toward the entrance, producing a subtle sense of invitation while simultaneously embedding concealed storage within their thickness. This calibrated geometry introduces a ritualised threshold condition, compressing and releasing space to enhance immersion. Despite its modest footprint, the interior achieves a layered spatial rhythm, where circulation unfolds gradually around a central bar.

Material selection operates as the primary carrier of meaning. Handcrafted resin panels capture the viscosity and luminosity of Cognac, rendering time as a visual and tactile phenomenon. The material evokes the slow transformation of liquid within oak barrels, while also abstracting its aromatic spectrum, from honey and vanilla to spice and fruit.

The floor introduces a second narrative layer. Stone surfaces appear to fracture and rise, suggesting vines breaking through the earth. Embedded within this terrain are twenty four metal inlays, referencing the traditional East Asian solar calendar and its cyclical perception of time. Through this gesture, the project bridges Western spirits culture with an Eastern cosmological framework, situating Cognac within a broader temporal imagination.

The spatial sequence is organised around the bar, conceived as both focal point and experiential anchor. Metallic lines extend across the floor in rhythmic gradients, guiding movement while reinforcing the theme of temporal progression. Open display cabinets remain secondary, allowing atmosphere rather than product to dominate perception.

Seated at the bar, visitors encounter a carefully staged interplay of light and reflection. Resin surfaces capture shifting illumination, while metallic elements emit a subdued golden glow. Actions such as selecting a bottle, lifting a glass, or observing the liquid under light become part of a choreographed ritual, where sensory perception and memory converge.
Here, retail is redefined as a temporal encounter. The act of tasting is inseparable from spatial experience, and the architecture itself participates in the construction of meaning.

MO Studio frames the project as more than a branded environment. It is conceived as a vessel through which the public can access the philosophy embedded in Cognac production, particularly the notion of time as a generative force. By translating this abstraction into material, light, and movement, the space positions itself between commerce and contemplation.

The Ningbo store ultimately proposes an alternative model for luxury retail, one that privileges atmosphere over display and narrative over immediacy. In doing so, it aligns with a broader shift in contemporary design, where spaces are no longer defined solely by function, but by their capacity to evoke, educate, and endure in memory.
